Check ComplianceWhat is the AI Act and Why It's Important
The AI Act is the European regulation on artificial intelligence that came into force in 2024. It establishes mandatory requirements for the development and use of AI systems based on a risk-based approach, classifying AI applications into four risk categories with proportionate obligations.
For Italian companies that develop or use AI systems, compliance with the AI Act is not optional: penalties for violations can reach significant amounts. Anticipating regulatory requirements means avoiding penalties, building customer trust and gaining a competitive advantage in the market.
Main AI Act Requirements
The regulation imposes specific obligations that vary based on the risk level of the implemented AI system.
- ✓
Assessment and classification of the AI system's risk level
- ✓
Complete and updated technical documentation of the system and data used
- ✓
Implementation of risk management systems and continuous monitoring
- ✓
Transparency and user information on AI system operation
- ✓
Human oversight and ability to override automated decisions
Risk Levels According to AI Act
The AI Act classifies AI systems into four risk categories, each with specific compliance requirements.
Prohibited AI Systems
Applications that represent a clear threat to security and fundamental rights of people. These systems are completely prohibited in the EU.
Examples: Social scoring, behavior manipulation, real-time biometric recognition in public spaces
High-Risk AI Systems
Systems that can significantly impact security or fundamental rights. Require conformity assessment, extensive documentation and continuous supervision.
Examples: Personnel selection systems, credit scoring, medical diagnoses, critical infrastructure management
Systems with Transparency Obligations
Applications with transparency requirements to ensure users are aware of interacting with AI and can make informed decisions.
Examples: Chatbots, recommendation systems, content generators (deepfake, generative AI)
Minimal Risk Systems
Most AI systems fall into this category. No specific obligations are required, but voluntary adoption of codes of conduct is recommended.
Examples: Spam filters, product recommendation systems, AI video games
